Disabling the Clicking Sound in Internet Explorer

Some people get really irritated with the constant clicking noise that Internet Explorer makes when navigating through web pages by clicking links. If you want to turn this clicking noise off, it's pretty easy to do.
  • Go to 'Control Panel'
  • Double-click on the 'Sounds and Audio Devices' control panel
  • Click the Sounds tab.
  • Scroll down in the 'Program events' list until you find the 'Windows Explorer' section, then highlight 'Start Navigation.'
  • Change the 'Sounds' drop down menu at the bottom of the dialog to '(None).'
  • Press the OK button when done.
This will stop the clicking noise as you navigate different web pages.

I got this crazy clicking all the time, even when I turned off the sound! What I finally did was delete a file named "Windows Navigation Start.wav" and I haven't heard the sound since, nor has it appeared to have any negative affect on my system.

I find windows sounds infuriating – especially when I am recording something and want to navigate the computer.

I have tried turning them off, but Windows XP – ‘works the way you want it to’ – doesn’t believe that I really want sound off and turns them back on again!

My foolproof way is to go to Windows/media folder (you may have to unhide the contents) where you will find all those annoying sounds that have been bothering you. Delete the lot! If you are a bit wimpy, then create a new folder in ‘media’ and move all the sound files into it. In either case – the result is blessed silence and Windows cannot reinstate the damn things.

what about for people on work computers that cannot access the control panel. thats why nobody uses internet explorer. because it freaking sucks! CHROMEEE / MOZILLAAAA!

  30. Wow, thanks, I inherited the click sound from a program that installed itself on my PC
    I tried deleting:
    Windows Navigation Start.wav
    but this didn't work.

so i then deleted the following 2 wavs:
    Windows XP Start.wav
    xpstart.wav

as suggested by someone on this blog and hey presto, no more annoying clicking sound when I open folders in Windows Explorer within Windows XP
    Thanks - Jude

warning! this sound is important for identifying viruses! usually when viruses search trough your files&folders you can actually annoyingly hear this sound in the background, if you disable the sound you will lose that advantage.

good luck having your files and folders browsed then. ;)

Does not work because your instructions are faulty. There is no "no sound" option on vista so what do I click?? Also no "sounds & audio devices" not even on search took me forever to find what it's called on Vista :(

For real if I could shoot you some cash right now I would... The next step was to toss the entire computer out the window.. I can't do annoying sounds like that... I feel like I can breathe easier.
